A closet must have and so you’ve been told. It can go from a classic biker look to an edgy chic. Leather jacket that is. After eyeing that coveted piece of luxury now what? To buy or not to buy? What is it really made of? Are there any animals harmed in the making of this jacket? If there are feelings of uncertainty and pity for the animals that have to go through the process of being made into a man’s clothing then maybe faux leather jacket could be the next thing. A faux leather jacket is made of artificial materials minus the real animal skin. Although it might not give a real leather experience, at least a faux leather jacket can save you bucks and a nagging conscience (this goes to the animals that were harmed in the making of the real leather ones).
Most faux leather jackets are made up of several materials such as polyester and cotton down to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Such materials then go through several processes and numerous intense chemical treatments to be able to come up with a leather like feel and finish. Faux leather jacket is becoming a staple trend nowadays. Aside from the fact that it is cheaper than the original it is also more ethically acceptable since there are no issues regarding animals to deal with.
Although the original is the best thing a faux leather jacket could pass as the better alternative. To determine whether the jacket on sale is original or faux here are some basics to keep in mind:
* Whiff it. A real leather always has a distinctive smell. The smell is from the fact that original leather used to come from something that used to be living. It is from an animal source. On the other hand, a faux does not have that smell or it might have but not as strong.
* Look for the pores. Being natural means that irregularities are a part of it. Original leather has irregular pore patterns. In this case, irregularities are a good thing. Look for it. In faux, the pores are more consistent and regular.
* Be edgy. Look for the edges of the jacket. The part of where it has been cut. Remember that an original will have a rough edge, therefore it must feel and look rough. If you saw this on your jacket, then it is real. A faux leather jacket would have a smoother feel. The cut and edges in faux is comparable to a foam or plastic.
* The touch. Always take note of the texture. Just like the smell, an original leather must have a more inconsistent texture. Hey, it used to be from something that was alive anyway. In a faux made leather jacket, the pores are more consistent and regular. The feel is also smoother compared to that of the original.
* Hair’s the deal. The ultimate test to know whether you’re having a genuine leather or not. Try to test it with your pet’s hair. Yes, you read it right. Animal hairs easily stick to what is man made, therefore if your pet’s hair stick to that newly bought jacket chances are you bought a faux leather jacket.
The bottom line is an original leather jacket tends to be more inconsistent and irregular since it used to came from animal source. While the faux leather jacket is more consistent and regular since the source is manipulated and man-made.
