North Korean (DPRK) Leader Kim jong-Un and United States’ (U.S.) President Donald Trump met for the first time at Sentosa Island, Singapore, the site of the tumultuously planned summit regarding denuclearization Korean Peninsula and generally easing of diplomatic tensions. Today’s greetings mark the first time Kim has personally met with a western dignitary and the first time a DPRK leader has met with a sitting U.S. president.

The summit is the product of months of preparations including delegations originating from the U.S., DPRK, South Korea, China, Russia, Japan, and others. The White House abruptly withdrew on May 24th, when scheduled joint military exercises were regarded by Kim as threatening DPRK sovereignty, DPRK Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui referring to U.S. Vice President Mike Pence as a “political dummy”, and suggested a possible nuclear exchange. Trump stated the DPRK were acting out of, “tremendous anger and open hostility”. South Korean President Moon Jae-in swiftly met with Kim four days later in the Joint Security Area inside the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) keeping possible communications about denuclearization and unification open.

DPRK displayed their resolve towards denuclearization on April 30th, by inviting foreign media to observe the decommissioning of Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site. DPRK has detonated 6 nuclear devices underground, the September 3rd test created a 6.9 magnitude earthquake with a U.S. Air Force Technical Applications Center estimation of 70-250 kilotons and the state run news agency claims it was hydrogen bomb. Decommissioning the test site is debatable on the effects on the overall nuclear arms program.

The future of the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center will be centerpiece, when it produce the fissionable fuel which was previously provided for the 6 known nuclear devices. The center has 2-Magnox reactors capable of producing 50-200 MW of electricity.

On May 25, Trump sent a logistics envoy to Singapore assuring the summit will run smoothly and the security of the two dignitaries. Kim will travel to Singapore via his highly modified train with China extending further security like the March 27 meeting in Beijing, while Trump will arrive in Singapore aboard Air Force One.

The site, Sentosa Island, is part of the 80-island chain which make up the sovereign city-state of Singapore. Sentosa consists mostly of resort style amenities including a golf course which can be accessed via vehicle, boat, helicopter, or mass transit, however all will be restricted during the summit. Press Secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed the summit will be held at the Capella Hotel however neither will reside there during the summit. Trump will be staying at the Shangri-La Hotel and Kim at the St Regis Singapore. All three hotels will not have rooms available from May 28 thru June 15, for security.
